Who Are Areola Tattoos For?

Areola tattoos are available for both men and women who have undergone a mastectomy and breast reconstruction as a result of breast cancer. We also provide them to clients who have completed surgery on their chest, experienced any form of trauma to the nipple, or have uneven pigmentation. There are a couple of methods of tattooing available. Areola pigmentation adds color around an existing nipple. Or as an alternative to reconstructing a physical nipple, 3D areola tattoos use color and shading techniques to create the appearance of a nipple.

How long after surgery can I get areola tattoos?

We recommend waiting for 4-6 months (or longer, depending on the skin healing process) after surgery before getting tattoos. This may feel like a long time to wait, but we want to make sure your breasts are completely healed before applying any pigment.

How many appointments will it take?

We recommend two appointments: one initial appointment to complete your areola tattoos, then a follow up about one month later to provide any touch-ups. During the touch-up appointment, we can address any unevenness or add further pigmentation. The follow-up ensures that you’ll be happy with the look of your tattoos forever.

How long do areola tattoos last?

We expect 3D areola tattoos to last for your lifetime. However, as with any tattoos, the pigment may fade gradually over time. If you experience fading, you can come in for a touch up.

Is it painful?

Like all tattoos, areola tattoos can cause some discomfort, However, most patients report feeling minimal, if any, pain. If you have received breast implants as part of reconstructive surgery, you may be more sensitive to discomfort. We can apply a topical numbing cream to ensure that you feel comfortable.

What should I wear to my appointment?

We simply recommend wearing a top that is easy to put on and take off. We’ll ask you to remove your top for the procedure and will cover the rest of your torso with a robe. At the end of your appointment, we will dress your tattoo area with protective bandages, and you’ll be able to get dressed as normal. You may choose to wear a bra or not.

Do 3D areola tattoos work for all skin tones?

Yes! We have pigments to match all natural areola colors, including a range of pink, red, and brown tones.

Are there risks to areola tattooing?

The largest risk to any tattooing procedure is infection. We use all sanitized equipment in a thoroughly cleaned environment. It is important that during the healing process, you protect your tattoos with bandages and ointment to keep them clean. This will keep the risk of infection to a minimum.
